Sampling vs modelling piano VSTs

Both approaches can make inspiring piano instruments. The useful distinction is whether the sound comes mainly from recorded piano audio or from a mathematical model of the instrument.

Sampled piano libraries

Sampled piano libraries are built from recorded notes, releases, pedal noise and room tone. They can feel very real when the recordings capture the instrument's quirks, but they often need more disk space.

Modelled piano plugins

Modelled piano plugins generate the piano sound mathematically. They are usually smaller and more adjustable, but the realism depends on how convincing the model feels under your fingers.

Practical choice: use audio demos first. A modelled piano can be excellent for portability and control, while a recorded library can carry the tone, room and uneven human detail of a specific piano.
